Part 1: Choose the best possible meanings for each of the highlighted words (items 1-3).
Reading passage 1
Easter, which celebrates Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead, is Christianity’s most important holiday. It has been called a (1) moveable feast because it doesn’t fall on a set date every year, as most holidays do.
1. approachable 4. able to be moved
2. fast 5. capable of causing changes
3. fixed
By reductio ad absurdum, choices 1, 2 and 3 can immediately be eliminated.
I think the examiner wants to trick students into choosing 4 which looks too obvious, but moveable in this context means 'changing from one date to another in different year'.
5. 'capable of causing changes' sounds vague-- the phrase is improperly worded.
4. ‘able to be moved’ doesn’t convey the meaning of 'changing from one date to another in different year'.
Therefore, all the choices are wrong!
If I’m not forced to choose from these 5 choices, I’ll define ‘movable’ in this context as ‘non-recurring’.
Anyway, I choose 5 because I guess that the examiner intends to trick many students into choosing 4 which looks too obvious to be true. Too bad if my answer is wrong.
