British English or US English in exam?

Post by Tansy » Mon Oct 07, 2019 3:45 pm

In Task 1, /fɑː(r)/ is given as the pronunciation of “far”. This is British English.
As /r/ will be silent in “far side”, but there will be an /r/ sound in “far end” when /r/ is linked with /e/.
As for north American English, there will be an /r/ sound in both “far side” and “far end”. So, /fɑːr/ will be given as the pronunciation of “far”.
The question is what will happen in the exam? Are students expected to give answers in US English or British English?

Good question Tansy, but don't worry much about the exam question as long as you are able to distinguish on those British and US accents. Students will be given the choices to choose on cos the exam questions are all multiple choices. In the course book, we will mainly stress on the US accent but there will be some part of contents (ie. English vowels) deal with the British accent. However, we will focus on the differences of those accents in Module 12.
Hope this answer your question.
