สวัสดีครับ อาจารย์
ผมได้อ่านหนังสือประกอบกับการดูคลิปบรรยาย

ในหนังสือ Place of Articulation มี 8 ตำแหน่ง
แต่ในคลิปบอกว่ามี 7 ตำแหน่ง ซึ่งในคลิปไม่มี Velar ครับ


และ เทอมที่ผ่านมา ในวิชา 14215 Place of Articulation
มีการกล่าวว่ามี 7 ตำแหน่ง แต่ใน 14320 ไม่มี เสียง Trill

นศ. จึงอยากทราบว่า เสียง /r/ ถ้าอยู่ใน trill กับ approximant มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างไรครับ

อ.คริส ช่วยกรุณาอธิบายว่าตำแหน่งของเสียง r ในคำเป็นสิ่งที่กำหนดไว้โดย place of articulation คะ เรียกว่า light and dark 'r' ถ้าเป็นเสียง r ที่อยู่ภายในคำๆนั้นก็เป็น light r แต่ถ้าเป็นเสียง r ที่ไปอยู่ในตำแหน่งท้ายคำๆนั้นก็เป็น dark r ทั้งนี้ไม่เกี่ยวว่าเป็นภาษาอังกฤษแบบอังกฤษหรืออเมริกันแต่อย่างใดนะคะ

เสียง r trill เป็นเสียงรัวลิ้นค่ะ r approximant เป็นเสัยง r ในภาษาอังกฤษมาตรฐานค่ะ

Hi Khun Krittaya,

You don’t need to worry about the trill for English – we don’t have this sound at all! I think the reason there are so many videos about trills on Youtube about it is that these are for native English speakers who are learning Spanish, Russian or some other language that has this sound.

One thing about the trill, in languages that have it, is that it can alternate with a “tap” or “flap”, where the tongue just touches the roof of the mouth once. Do we have this sound in English? Actually, as Rachel explains in one of the videos above, in American English, a “t” or “d” between vowels is quite similar to this. Examples are “matter” and “better”. The IPA symbol for the tap is [ɾ]. However, you won’t find this symbol in English dictionaries, probably because it’s only present in some varieties of English. They will just write “t” or “d” instead.

What about Thai? Here is a fun video about how Thais pronounce “r” and “l” sounds.

According to the presenter, the rolled or trilled “r” is quite formal, and in practice most Thais pronounce both “r” and “l” as a tap or flap. (Watching the first four minutes is enough, later he gets into some language history which isn’t relevant for our purposes.)

So, for “r” in English, forget about trills, taps or flaps. It’s an approximant, which suggests that the tongue doesn’t touch the roof of the mouth, but just gets close (which is what “approximate” means here.) I really like “Rachel’s English” (although some people might think she goes into too much detail) so I’ll just give you another one of her videos.

จากประเด็นที่ว่าวิชา 14215 นั้นมี ลักษณะการออกเสียง Trill แต่ 14320 ไม่มีนั้น
ผมคิดว่าหนังสือทั้งสองเล่มควรจะ มีทิศทางเดียวกัน คือให้ใส่ Trill ไว้ทั้งสองเล่ม
แล้วใช้การอธิบายเพิ่มเติม แบบที่ อ.ทั้งสองท่าน ได้ตอบในกระทู้นี้ครับ หรือหากจะไม่ใส่ก็ไม่ต้องใส่ทั้งสองเล่ม

ในมุมของ นศ. คือ พอเรียนวิชา 14215 มาก่อนแล้ว เราท่องตารางนี้ตั้งแต่ก่อนสอบ และเราก็หวังว่าสิ่งที่เราท่องได้แล้ว
มันจะช่วยให้เราเรียน 14320 ได้เร็วขึ้นอีก แต่พอสะดุดที่มันไม่เหมือนเดิม นศ.บางคนก็อาจจะมึนงงได้ครับ
