Module 2 sentences for correction

Post by chrish » Tue Apr 24, 2018 1:12 am

The ten sentences below were taken from letters of introduction written for the Module 2 team task. (Sorry, they aren’t yours, but belong to students from a previous year!) Each sentence contains one or more errors in grammar, punctuation or sentence structure. Can you spot the problems and correct them? Post your answers here – it’s okay just to do a few if you’re not sure of the others, but it would be great if you could do all ten. Keep in mind that there are different ways to edit and correct the problems. :)

1. We are all Thai people from each provinces of Thailand.

2. Thailand is very beautiful country, famous country, and very kind of people.

3. Thailand is located at South East Asia and knows as “land of smile” because of Thai people is very kind and hospitality.

4. Thailand has a lot of interested thing that's why people call "Amazing Thailand".

Wow, both of you have done a really good job here. For number 5, Kh Tansy's version is correct rather than Kh Krittaya's. It's also nice that you provide several alternatives. Later I will post more detailed comments, as well as my own corrections. There's still time for other students to give it a try! :)

Let's have some fun with variation of sentence patterns.

I think of you every day. --> Not a day goes by without me thinking of you.

A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
-->
Since a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed

The sleeping cat sits on the mat and purrs.

The purring cat sleeps sitting on the mat.

The sitting cat purrs sleeping on the mat.

The mat-sitting cat purrs sleepingly.

Have you ever wondered why English writing is a bitter pill to swallow for most Thai students...LOL?

Read this article, and you'll know the reasons:

There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England nor French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweet-breads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you can comb through the annals of history but not a single annal? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? If you wrote a letter, perhaps you bote your tongue?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? Park on driveways and drive on parkways?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another.

Have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when they are absent?

Have you ever seen a horsefull carriage or a strapfull gown? Met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable? And where are all those people who ARE spring chickens or who would ACTUALLY hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn't a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

Here are my versions of the sentences (sometimes with alternatives):

1. We are all Thai people, each from a different province of Thailand.

2. Thailand is a very beautiful and famous country. The people are very kind.

3. Thailand is located in South East Asia. It is known as “the Land of Smiles” because Thai people are very kind and hospitable.

4. Thailand has a lot of interesting things. That’s why people call it “Amazing Thailand.” (or)

Thailand has a lot of interesting things, which is why people call it “Amazing Thailand.”

5. We are very pleased to introduce the members of our team to you.

6. Penny has her own business and lives alone in the central region. She’s a widow.

7. Panasorn is the only man in our group.

8. She has her own salon in south Phuket province. (or)

She owns a salon in the province of Phuket, in the South.

9. Her family works on the farm, planting and harvesting two rice crops a year.

Note: “Family” here can take a singular or plural verb, as in “her family work as farmers.” We could also phrase this as “her family members work as farmers,” which is less ambiguous.

10. This project is important for us.

We should be posting another set from your work on Module 5 soon. Thanks for taking part!
